Short Films

To properly research for my short film and get a better understanding of horror in short films before I start with my planning, I must look at other horror short films to gather inspiration on plots and storylines, locations and technical styles, and anything else I may be able to use to influence my decisions throughout the planning stages of my work. I looked into 2 different short films, 1 with a similar sub genre to mine (“NIGHT TERROR”), which plays on the idea of nightmares and being the most venerable at alone night, and the other (“The Smiling Man”) is of a more gory sub-genre but I chose to look at this one because I loved the style of the SFX as well as how creepy and disturbing this short film feels. I want to briefly analyse them individually and discuss what I may use from each and or what inspires me, but first wanted to look at something I have been unsure about while thinking about planning, which is the length of time for my film. While many people have suggested creating something between 5 and 10 minutes, I wanted to look at some examples to see how long they have created their short films and wether or not I felt that the story was portrayed within this amount of time. Both of the films I looked at were between 5 to 7 minutes, and I feel that the stories were more than adequately portrayed in this time frame.

The first short film (below) is a 5 minute long short film based of the idea of night terrors, hence the name, the film takes us through a woman’s struggle to leave the house because of some kind of supernatural or demonic force and being keeping her afraid to leave and walk into the dark. Although the setting and plot of my short film is going to be a lot different to this one, I thought I should touch on the significance of the darkness and nighttime used in this short film to portray the fear many of us feel while alone in the dark. Night time and dark settings are an essential part of the iconography of horror and sets the scene extremely well as well as helping the scenes seems that more sinister just with light changes. The use of darkness really creates an atmosphere of dread and terror and is something I would like to utilise as best I can in my short film.

In terms of the rest of the film, I really like the SFX of the creature thing in this short films, however I do not think something like this would fit well in my short films as I have decided on my ‘monster’ or ‘villain’ to be that of a satanic cult, therefor, in terms of costuming, my characters will be a lot more simple and will most likely just be in black cloaks with masks on (to almost dehumanise them and not to let any facial features or expressions show through).

This second short film is definitely my favourite and, in my opinion, create a much more intense and disturbing atmosphere than the other, and in my short film, the atmosphere that makes this short film so disturbing is definitely something I want capture and portray through my work. The intensely creepy atmosphere is immediately built up through the lack of script, and therefore eerie silence, as well as the casting of a young innocent looking child as the main character. These two combined already create a fear of dread as we know that the child is either going to see something awful, do something awful, or die at the hands of something, well, awful. The tension continues to build through the placement of the balloons, the sight of a non human/creature looking hand placing a balloon and the creepy broken dolls in the bags attached to the balloons, this is all accompanied by loud screeching music common in horror to really create an uncomfortable atmosphere. Skipping to the end, we then see a very disturbing man-thing and are showed some really unsettling shots of it wiping blood on its face.

Now although, again, my plot isn’t going to be very similar of this, it has still been useful for me to look at some short films in this genre to gather ideas of many different aspects of short films in this genre. I now feel I have a better idea of some of the important parts of making a short film, and how this can influence my own, such as length – The Smiling Man was just over 6 minutes long – the way they portray a story without having to give too much detail of why this is happening and who the characters are, as well being able to create something scary and unsettling through such a simple (compared to the complexity of a lot of full length horror films) story line.

Location Research

Since beginning this project, and even before changing my idea to just a short film rather than a whole campaign, I have had a very clear idea of what kind of location I wanted to film in, the trouble was just finding a location that I could film in. I wanted to find an abandoned or derelict building to use as my location, possibly a hospital or factory etc, I have had this idea in mind so sternly due to the extra eeriness I feel that an abandoned building has, as well an element of mystery surrounding the location. Abandoned buildings have a passed and have had a whole lifetime of use, and now have essentially been left to rot and die without maintenance. By using an abandoned building in horror it can help foreshadow and link into the idea of ghosts within the building from a time where the building was in use, the element of mystery within an abandoned building can be extremely useful in terms of the idea of ghosts and the paranormal because it proposes the question of “what happened here?”, at least in my opinion it does. Now that my reasons for wanting to use somewhere abandoned have been clarified, it is time to move onto the research.

To begin my research, as I really didn’t know where to start, I simply went to google to see if there were some websites or articles which could give me some further inspiration and a starting point and idea of where to look next. I searched up “abandoned houses near me”, this was a very vague question to ask google but definitely gave me an idea of where to go from here as this lead my to a website called www.shothotspot.com . This website ended up being extremely useful in helping me locate a few places of interest as I could narrow my search down to my location and how far away from my location I would be willing to travel. Below is a screenshot from this website showing some of the places within a 10 mile radius from me.

Screen Shot 2019-03-15 at 11.13.42.png

A few of these places caught my attention a lot more than the others, for example, Bank Hall. According to its Wikipedia page (I know wiki is not the most reliable source for research but since I just wanted to know the buildings currents listing and a bit of brief history, I think wiki is perfectly appropriate here) here is some information on the building:

Bank Hall is a Jacobean mansion in Bretherton, Lancashire, England. It is a Grade II* listed building and is at the centre of a private estate, surrounded by parkland. The hall was built on the site of an older house in 1608 by the Banastres who were lords of the manor. The hall was extended during the 18th and 19th centuries. Extensions were built for George Anthony Legh Keck in 1832–1833, to the design of the architect George Webster. Legh Keck died in 1860 and the estates passed to Thomas Powys, 3rd Baron Lilford. The contents were auctioned in 1861 and the hall used as a holiday home and later leased to tenants. During the Second World War the Royal Engineers used it as a control centre. After the war the estate was returned to the Lilfords whose estate offices moved to the east wing of the house until 1972 when the house was vacated. The building was used as a location for the 1969 film The Haunted House of Horror.”

I decided since this building has already been the location for a horror film then it may be very useful to look at some clips from this film so I can get a feel for the building, and although the film was shot in 1969 and the house will have changed a lot, this at least gives me a rough idea of the interior and the style of the house. From looking at some of the clips, I think , if I can contact the right people and get the permission I need, then this would be an amazing filming location for my short films nightmare sequence.

Moving along to another place on this map/list that seems to be perfect – in theory – for what I am planning is Brindle Service Reservoir, however with a place like this there is much more to consider in terms of electricity supplies and the lighting of the building to gather wether I would actually need artificial lighting etc. I don’t think I would really be able to film my whole nightmare sequence here, however, as it is near me, it may be a good location to keep in mind incase I decide to gather some extra shots in a different location, this of course depends on my further planning. I think  the fact that this location is pretty much empty and apart from the brick arches throughout, there aren’t really many distinct-able features, making it perfect for the background of the horror as it wouldn’t take too much attention away from the characters or the plot. To be able to get a feel for the look and atmosphere of this location I found a small blog written on a website called http://www.28dayslater.co.uk that shows many pictures of the location, the blog also stated that there was a planning application to demolish it in 2012, but the place was still standing in 2014 when the blog was written. I will have to look into this a little further if I do decide to use this location in my film, however for now I am finding it difficult to gather any more detailed information.

Film Visual Ideas

To make a successful short film, more importantly to me, a scary and thought provoking short film, I think it would be important to look at the main stylistic techniques and visual effects that are iconic to the horror genre. Although I do not intend on starting any detailed planning yet, this means at least beginning to look at many different aspects of the genre; Technical Conventions (camera work and angles etc.), Symbolic Conventions (Colours, weapons, props that all have some kind of symbolic meaning), Characters (villains/victims, gouls/ghosts), Themes (Zombies, ghosts, serial killers etc.). I will be looking at these in sections and making a rough list of some of the techniques I am going to be looking at and taking into consideration once detailed planning commences.

Technical Conventions: First I want to look at Canted angles, these are used to make the scene seem more interesting for the audience, and in many cases quite disorientating, I think this will have a great effect on the dream sequence part of my short film as it may help to create the dystopian visuals I am looking at creating. Another interesting camera technique/angle is point of view shots, I may use these before the dream sequence but don’t intend on using them too much. However they do create some tension by showing the audience what the character sees from their own perspective. Of course, as I mentioned in my essay and my blog about it quite a lot, music is a key technical convention of horror, as well as any other sound effects. I plan on mostly having the real life shots fairly subtle in terms of sound and then for my dream sequence I quite like the idea of almost overwhelming the audience with sound effects, done well I think this could help add to the idea of dystopia.

Symbolic Conventions: Colours (red, black etc.) I think the use of colours in both the short film and for the poster is going to be a very key part of my work, I am also going to make the lighting in the dream sequence very dark and use mainly blacks and browns in terms of my props and costumes etc. I will also be using many ‘religious’ props such as bibles, or Satanic bibles, and crosses, or goat heads to tie in more subtle elements of horror.

Characters: The ‘villain’(s) will be a very important part of my work and will take the form of some kind of ghostly hooded cult – or at least that is my train of thought so far – so I can tie in all my research on cults and create something thought provoking rather than having a generic ghost or serial killer. My main character is also going to be a young and attractive female (you’re welcome Ella) and will most likely make her up, with makeup/sfx/costume, into a bit of the classic “slut” (sorry Ella) as this will fit in with the classic horror character and gender roles.

My visual planning will of course start to improve and develop in detail throughout the next week or so and so I will be able to come back to this and explain of any added ideas, plans or changes I will be making and why and what in my research has influenced me to decided to make these decisions.

Plot Ideas

Although I haven’t come up with a full plot for my short film as of yet, I have had a few ideas in terms of subject matter, rough structure and sub-genre. I have decided to still use the concept of cults, rituals and satanism in my short film but have decided I do not want the whole plot to be just based on cults and instead have decided to as well focus on the paranormal; I would like my short film to fit within the paranormal sub-genre while still using much of my cult and Satanism research to help build my plot. I have also decided that I would like to base the structure of my short film around the idea of nightmares and/or night terrors as I think this may be a great way of helping build a plot/storyline. I do not know much about films to do with nightmares or night terrors and the only experience I have of this are my only experiences to reference and so may find it useful to do some quick research on this. I like the idea of creating the visuals to be quite distorted and glitchy as I want the nightmare section of my short film to feel very uncomfortable and disturbing. I also know that from personal experience, night terrors tend to jump from one horrible thing to another and that the continuity of the nightmare sequence is not as important as it will be in the rest of the short film, meaning that I get to be a lot more creative in terms of my editing style, techniques and visuals.

I will be conducting a bit more research into short films in the horror genre as well looking into short films, music videos and art that has been inspired by nightmares, night terrors or sleep paralysis etc. I have already looked in to a music video called ‘Bury a Friend’ which was my main inspiration into looking into the concept of nightmares. Once I have done a little more research I will be able to fully write my plot in more detail as a start to my official planning.

Film Festivals

I have decided to look into entering into and showcasing my short film at a film festival, I feel like this would be a good way of promoting my work and having something to work towards. As well as creating the short film and entering it into a film festival, I will also create a poster but that will be the extent of my promotional work for my short film. Initially I wanted to look into horror specific film festivals but could not find some, right off the bat, that were suitable for the type of short film I would want to enter, and so am looking into all short film festivals in general. I ended up being directed to the BFI website that had a list of “film festivals for young filmmakers” and so I decided to take a look and see if any of these would suit what I want to do.

The first film festival I have found that seems like it would be interesting to submit my short film into is the Cambridge Film Festival, I have read a little about this film festival and although it isn’t catered towards any particular type of film style or genre, I think entering into a film festival with a great deal of variety may be an interesting route to go down. Although I would love to consider submitting my short into this festival, there seems to be now shown dates to submit my work as of yet, of course I will check this nearer the time but for now I will look at a few others.

Another film festival I found that I think may be more interesting, as it is catered specifically towards short films, is London Short Film Festival, although their next festival isn’t until the 10th – 19th January 2020, I thought it would still be a very interesting festival to enter into. They seem to be a very inclusive festival who is happy to support low- budget work as well as everything else, “Submissions are open to short films from every genre – we accept drama, comedy, horror & sci-fi, documentary, experimental, animation, music, viral and low-budget work”, they also work closely with BAFTA and so it would be an amazing opportunity for my work to get featured in this festival.

The last film festival to catch my eye was called Watersprite International Student Film Festival, I chose to look into this one as I liked the idea of submitting my work into a festival full of other students, again I am most likely going to have to enter for the 2020 film festival but it still seems worth giving it a try. Also, because this is an international festival I feel it would be an amazing opportunity to showcase my work to other cultures as well as being able to experience others, “Watersprite aims to support young film talent globally. We are working hard to expand our reach to all corners of the world. In 2019, Watersprite received over 1000 submissions from around 100 countries.”

‘Hell’ in the Music Industry

Although this blog is titled “hell in the music industry” I am not just solely focusing on songs or videos that are based on hell, but more songs, videos and lyrics with any type of  sinister message or vibe about them. For example, one of the songs I am going to be looking at is “Darkhangle” by HELL which is obviously based around satanism and Baphomet but I am also going to be looking at “Bury a Friend” by Billie Eillish which although has not direct links to satanism or hell, the lyrics and the video are extremely sinister and dark. I will talk about certain music videos I may take inspiration from as well as songs lyrics and album covers, some of this may be to help me research for my actual short film, for example the videos and their stylistic techniques, whereas I will be researching album cover art to gather inspiration for my posters etc.

Music videos: Both of the music videos I want to focus on are from the same artist, Billie Eilish, I really enjoy the style of her videos and the feel they have around them and her video techniques that she uses in her videos. The two videos I want to look at are “Bury a Friend” and “When the Party’s Over”, although the contents of the videos are different in many ways there is a lot about the style, look and feel of these videos that is very similar and signature Billie. I will first be looking at “Bury a Friend” which is based more directly off of the devil and possession etc, it is shown through many factors such as her acting possessed and Billie’s eyes glossing over as well as the classic theme of darkness and nighttime. This video is filmed in an apartment building of sorts that is seemed to look abandoned or derelict, I feel this is most relevant because I am planning on filming my short film in a similar kind of location and so may find it easier to take inspiration from this in terms of the way they utilise their location in their video. Another part of this video and the techniques they used that I think really contributed to the over all atmosphere of the video is the use of the flashing lights, I think this adds a element of distortion that makes the audience feel uncomfortable, which is something I am intending on doing.

The other video I wanted to look at is called “When the Party’s Over” this video is a lot more simple a minimal than the other one and focuses a lot more on facial expression and audience interpretation than the first video does. I still like the feel this video gives but in terms of taking inspiration, I feel like the first video is definitely more important to my work.

Lyrics: I have decided to look at the lyrics behind two different songs, one being “Darkhangle” by HELL, a song I would never listen to but may be very relevant to my work; and the other song being “Bury a Friend” by Billie Eilish, which is quite a sinister song but has entered the charts and mainstream pop music very effortlessly. First let me look at “Darkhangle” as I feel that these lyrics are more directly linked to satanism and so are in many way more ‘relevant’ in terms of my research. The first thing in the lyrics of this song that sticks out to me is the references to Baphomet throughout the song, the name Baphomet has come up to me many times throughout my research and so I am planning on doing a full blog just on this as it seems to me to be a very significant part of the subjects surrounding Satanism. There were also a few more names mentioned within this song that I feel may be worth looking into when looking more in depth when I look into Baphomet too “Son of Caim, Orobas, Shub-Niggurath, Beelzebub, Haagenti, Astaroth” (I would write about it in this blog but I feel like there might be too much information and it would just be a lot clearer in one longer blog dedicated to these ‘people’.) Another line from this song I found particularly interesting is “A life unchained through knowledge gained has sanctified my dream”, through other research I have become aware that a lot of what Satanism is based around – at least from my interpretation of my research so far – is to do with the pursuit of knowledge and centering your beliefs around knowledge, here’s a quote taken from the Satanic Temples official website that I think best helps to back up my point here: “Beliefs should conform to one’s best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one’s beliefs.”

Moving onto my next song thats lyrics I think deserve some looking into, “Bury a Friend” by Billie Eilish, I did also look into this and one of her other songs “When the Parties Over” when I was looking into inspiration in terms of the music videos, as I mentioned, her whole style is very appealing to me and I imagine it will influence me heavily when it comes to planning how my short film is going to look and how I want it to feel for the audience watching. In terms of the lyrics of this song, the bridge part of this song is really intriguing to me “For the debt I owe, gotta sell my soul, ‘Cause I can’t say no, no, I can’t say no, Then my limbs all froze and my eyes won’t close, And I can’t say no, I can’t say no,” I think the idea of ‘selling her soul’ is a very sinister concept and, although I am sure this song is referring to the music industry, it could be interpreted in many different ways to help my research. I also like the lyrics “when we all fall asleep, where do we go?” I think this would be a really interesting question/concept to base my short film around if I decide to go that way, maybe to incorporate the idea of a satanic night terror or something along those lines. I still have to look into other short horror films to see how others have chosen a plot for their short films, and depending on what I find from this I may go down the route of night terrors/sleep paralysis/nightmares linked with satanism.

Album cover art: Below is a collection of album covers either inspired by the idea of hell, satanism or, in the case of the Trippie Redd album, just in a style I find extremely interesting and could possibly link to many sins. Many of these albums are from rock or metal bands such as Iron Maiden, however the Trippie Redd album is a rap album but as I stated before, although not really linked to hell or satan in anyway I really liked the way it looks and some of the symbols could b loosely interpreted as something more satanic than what I’m sure he intended on creating. I am looking into various different art forms to get a wider idea of how satan and hell is represented in many different forms so it made sense to me to look at the album covers while looking into music and lyrics. I may come back to these when I start planning for my poster as I think these covers would be very useful when gathering inspiration for my poster, the aesthetic of it as well as composition. Personally I quite like the illustration of satan and hell the most in the Iron Maiden album covers as well as more of their album art work that isn’t included here, for example the cover art for their “Run To The Hills” single, as I really like the bottom half of that artwork and the representation of hell there and the various different characters at the bottom.

Week 3 & 4 Reflection

I thought it would be pointless writing a blog each week so rather I am just blogging when I feel like I have actually progressed in the planning and research of my work etc. I have so far started and am getting along well with my research stages and creating a better idea of my storyline and plot for my, now, short film. I have explained my reasons for changing my idea in a previous blog and will now begin developing on this concept further and base my research mostly around moving image rather than promotion and social media campaigns. I feel I am getting on well with my research stages and should be finished with this and ready to move into the planning within the next week or two. As my ideas are developing in my own head it has been hard to coherently explain my train of thoughts in my blogs at times but am confident that, although maybe seeming a little all over the place right now, will soon be able to show where all my ideas tie together (because in my head trust me they do.)

I feel there isn’t much else to write in this blog other than to mention that I am feeling confident and now more settled in my idea and can see my final short film much clearly in my head. I will write another blog possibly at the end on week 5 or 6 once I feel I have completed my research and have moved onto, or am at least starting to move on my planning as then I feel I can really reflect on how I feel my research will help my planning and what decision I have made because of this.

As Above, So Below

Recently I have been watching many horror films (as usual) but have also been trying to watch some that may revolve their plot around cults, satanism or the idea and concept of hell. “As Above, So Below” is a found footage horror film about a group of cave explorers searching hidden tunnels in the catacombs along with a historian in hopes of finding secret treasures deep below Paris. The film takes a very interesting turn when it appears that the group enter through a tunnel marked “abandon all hope ye who enter here”, the same quote that is said to be written above the gates of hell in Dante’s Inferno, a full blog on this will be one of my next ones as I would like to research Dante’s Inferno more and its meanings and interpretations as well as its influence on many things, including common views on hell in society as well as in film and other art forms. Back to the film: one by one may of the group start meeting horrific deaths and many start being haunted by their past. I really enjoyed the film as, in my opinion, the storyline was one of the most interesting stories I have ever experience in a horror film, it was truly intriguing throughout and I think a lot of this was due to the plot line being based around some historical facts and the idea of hell. In this blog I will be looking into some of the meaning of the film, some of the historical references made as well as briefly looking into any visual skills and effects they used and why I like these certain stylistic choices.

Meaning: To start with, the title of the film “As Above, So Below” has a great deal of meaning in itself, even in the film the quote is described as “the key to all magic”. The quote is an expression associated with; Sacred geometry, the idea that a God is the geometer for the whole world; Hermeticism, a religious, philosophical, spiritual, and often considered magical tradition of spiritual growth; Baphomet, a figure of the occult and satanism, a representation of the duality of male and female, heaven and hell, and night and day; and the Tarot, a deck of cards used in Europe to play games as well as used within the occult. I am most keen to look at the connection between this and Baphomet but will later write a full blog dedicated to researching Baphomet in more detail, I will also look into the use of Tarot cards and some of the symbols on them, their meanings and their connection to Satanism and/or the occult.

Historical References: As I stated before, the main reference of the film seems to be based around Dante’s Inferno, something that I will go into more detail researching in a later blog, I am hoping that this will help me when it comes to building a plot for my short film or at least give me some inspiration.

Visual Effects: This film is mainly found footage, something I have tried before but never been successful in and so this is a part of the film I will not be taking much inspiration from. I am more intrigued by the other visuals, for example the symbols of hell throughout and how they portrayed this and SFX, deaths in this film. In terms of the special effects, I like how it is not overly gory and more focuses on the shock factor rather than going down the ‘torture-porn’ pathway that many horror take nowadays. Although I do want to focus a little more on gore in my short film there were definitely a few moments in here that I would like to take inspiration from, for example the first death of one of the french characters when she gets her head smashed against the ground. I liked this scene because there was just enough detail to to tell that the character was dead but the SFX was not overdone to the point of being too much gore, you could almost describe it as … ‘tasteful’.

Another visual choice they made that I very much liked was the setting and ‘demon’ characters and their costume design. In terms of settings, of course I cannot go all the way to paris to film in the catacombs – I wish – I very much like the setting of somewhere abandoned, unseen or uncommon, I have been considering using an abandoned or derelict location for my filming since the beginning of my planning and research but by watching this film I have definitely made up my mind that this setting gives an erie element that a lot of public places don’t. Now, looking at the demons’ visuals, I like the simplicity of just using black cloaks and simple masks, I was originally planning on buying a goats skull kind of mask but while looking into this decided it was way too expensive to use, this is still an option if I can find a well priced one but if not I am heavily inspired by the simplicity of the costume design and choices.

Target Audience Stats

In my last blog, I talked about an essay I had written for our last project (specialist study) and how I felt I had explained my awareness of the genre I am planning on working within as well as discussing who the fans of horror tend to be and what about the genre entices them. As you can imagine, my essay did not involve many straight forward answers or statistics as I wanted it to be more of a topic discussion rather than an analysed explanation, so through this blog will be simplifying some of my findings about my target audience as well looking at the answers to a short questionnaire I will be sending round. I myself am of course a huge fan so in this blog will be factoring myself into this as well as some statistics from a questionnaire I will be sending out.

Although I feel I am pretty familiar with my target audience and the demographic I am trying to reach but thought it may be useful to send round a questionnaire to get some actual statistics on my target audience.

In my essay I looked into the phycology of who likes horror and it did tend to suggest it was mostly men due to their far more aggressive tendencies. Whereas I wanted to prove that nowadays, a lot more women seem to enjoy horror than they are expected to due to the same idea of men being a great deal more aggressive. In fact, from looking at the individual responses, only 1 out of all the people who said they didn’t like horror were female, meaning that the remaining 4 were all men.

Through looking at and comparing the result from “Do you enjoy risk taking or being scared?” and the “if you enjoy horror, why?” questions, I can clearly see that many people who enjoy horror tend to enjoy the feeling of adrenaline in general. Meaning that this demographic (teenagers/young adults of both genders) do tend to enjoy being scared.

I want to create a psychological and supernatural horror and many people said they enjoyed psychological horrors the most, this is good because I am hoping to create something that makes the audience think a little bit more than a basic slasher (for example) plot line may have.

The questionnaire has been up for about two days now and so I have gotten a lot more responses compared to what I had originally, however did not feel the need to re-analyse them as the pattern of the questions has stayed extremely similar. So instead of re-doing all the work I have done I thought it would be better to just put them at the bottom of this blog. The only thing that these extra answers brought to light that the original answers didn’t is the fact that so many people said their favourite sub-genres were either, psychological, which I have already mentioned, supernatural and gore. The fact that so much of my target audience likes gore and supernatural horror films really helps me in terms of what I want to create.
